R. V. BERRY - APPEAL HEARING ACCESS

From June 20 to June 24, 2022, the Court of Appeal will hear a conviction appeal in R. v. Berry (CA46589) at the Vancouver Law Courts. Members of the public and the media may observe the appeal hearing in person in courtroom 50 at the Vancouver Law Courts, where it is scheduled begin at 10 a.m. each day.

Given the level of interest from media and members of the public based in Victoria, the Court of Appeal has also arranged for a live feed of the appeal hearing to be simultaneously displayed in courtroom 301 at the Victoria courthouse at 850 Burdett Avenue. Space for media and members of the public in Victoria wishing to view the live feed of the appeal hearing in courtroom 301 will be available on a first come, first served basis. The appeal will not be livestreamed via Zoom.

The Court Policy on Use of Electronic Devices in Courtrooms applies to overflow spaces such as courtroom 301 abd generally prohibits taking photoraphs, video images, or audio recordings of any court proceeding. Please refer to the policy for details on permitted audio recording for accredited media.Penalties for failing to comply witht he policy may include prosecution for contempt of court. Please refer to the Court's Policy on Use of Electronic Devices in Courtrooms for important information about the prohibition on rebroadcasting or reposting video or images without specific authorization from the Chief Justice of British Columbia.

WELCOMING CEREMONY - THE HONOURABLE MR. JUSTICE PETER VOITH AND THE HONOURABLE MR. JUSTICE LEN MARCHAND

The Honourable Chief Justice Robert Bauman is pleased to advise that there will be a formal ceremony to welcome the Honourable Mr. Justice Peter Voith and the Honourable Mr. Justice Len Marchand to the Court of Appeal for British Columbia and the Court of Appeal of Yukon.

This welcoming ceremony will be held on Friday, 17 June 2022 at 4:15 p.m. in Courtroom 60 of the Vancouver Law Courts.

NEW COURT OF APPEAL ACT AND RULES - EFFECTIVE JULY 18, 2022

On July 18, 2022 the Court of Appeal Act, S.B.C. 2021, c. 6 will be brought into force and the existing Court of Appeal Rules will be repealed and replaced with the Court of Appeal Rules issued by Order in Council 271. For more information see the Ministry of Attorney General’s announcement.

Leading up to July 18th resources and information regarding the transition to the new Act and Rules will be shared via this announcements page and via the BC Court of Appeal’s twitter account.

COURT OF APPEAL CLOSURE - SEPTEMBER 30, 2022

The Court of Appeal will be closed on September 30, 2022 in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT

The British Columbia Court of Appeal welcomes the appointment of the Honourable Justice Karen Horsman, a judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia, to the Court of Appeal for British Columbia and the Court of Appeal of Yukon.
