JUDICIAL CLERKSHIPS AS AN ALTERNATIVE PATH TO LICENSING

Effective December 2, 2022, the Law Society of British Columbia has amended its rules to make judicial clerkships an alternative path to call and admission.

This means that law clerks will have the option of applying for call and admission after completing PLTC and a clerkship term of at least nine months without being required to complete a minimum period of articles. Law clerks, in consultation with their principal lawyer and firm, government body, or other organization, may still choose to complete a period of articles prior to their call and admission.

For more information on the changes, please see the Law Society of British Columbia website.

BROADCASTING OF APPEALS: COMMENCING JANUARY 3, 2023

As it did during the height of the pandemic, the British Columbia Court of Appeal will return to broadcasting appeals publicly by Zoom on 3 January 2023. Details may be found within Section 2.2 of the Court of Appeal’s Record and Courtroom Access Policy. Those who have already scheduled appeals on or after 3 January 2023 will be contacted by the registry to confirm that no parties object to the broadcast. After today, those scheduling appeals in 2023 must submit the Public Broadcast of Appeals form. For civil appeals, the form is submitted with the notice of hearing. For criminal appeals, the form is submitted by the respondent when filing their factum. Copies of this form may be found on the forms page or located here.
