SUPERIOR COURTS COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

British Columbia Court of Appeal Chief Justice Robert Bauman and Supreme Court of British Columbia Chief Justice Christopher Hinkson announce the appointment of the Honourable Bruce Cohen as the Superior Courts Communications Officer.

Mr. Cohen recently retired from the bench after serving the public with distinction for 28 years in the capacity of a Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

In announcing the appointment of Mr. Cohen the Chief Justices recognize the important role that members of the media play in informing the public about the justice system and decisions of the Superior Courts. In this regard, they explained that Mr. Cohen will act as a spokesperson for the Superior Courts and as a liaison between the Superior Courts Judiciary and the media respecting the decisions of the Superior Courts and any initiatives undertaken by the Superior Courts to improve access to justice or to make the Superior Courts' processes more efficient and affordable.

The Chief Justices also noted that the appointment of Mr. Cohen reinstates a position formerly held by the late Honourable Lloyd McKenzie, a retired member of the Supreme Court of British Columbia. During his tenure in the position of Superior Courts Information Officer, Mr. McKenzie acted as a liaison between the Superior Courts and the media in the interests of bringing clarity to the processes and decisions of the Superior Courts.

Mr. Cohen's appointment will take effect September 1, 2015.

PD-47-MODEL ORDERS

Chief Justice Hinkson has issued PD - 47 - Model Orders which prescribes the use of model forms of orders for certain types of orders. PD - 47 will take effect on August 1, 2015.

As with previous model orders that the Court has issued, applicants must identify for the court and the respondents where the relief sough differs from that provided in the model order and must satisfy the Court that the relief provided in the model form of order is appropriate in the circumstances of the particular proceeding. However, with the issuance of PD-47, the Court has adopted a new process for model orders. Going forward, when the Court amends the terms of model orders (e.g., to respond to legislative changes or developments in the case law), issues new model orders or rescinds existing model orders, the Court will announce the change and, rather than issuing a new practice direction, will post a link to the updated model order. As part of this process change, the Court has created a new section on its website where all model orders are posted including the currency information: Model Orders.
