The Annual Report of the Court of Appeal for British Columbia covering the activities of the Court for 2023 is now available.

COMPLETION INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLICATION BOOKS UPDATED

Application book completion instructions for leave/stay and applications to vary have been updated to clarify that application response books should include evidence, exhibits, or affidavits (if any) relevant to the application and not otherwise included in the application book or in the response book of any other respondent.

UPDATE: REGISTRAR’S FILING DIRECTIVE

The Registrar’s Filing Directive has been updated to reiterate parties’ responsibility to ensure the accuracy and authenticity of materials filed with the Court, particularly given various litigation aids and artificial intelligence tools.

JUDICIAL RETIREMENT - THE HONOURABLE MR. JUSTICE JOHN J.L. HUNTER

The Honourable Mr. Justice John J.L. Hunter retired from the Court of Appeal for British Columbia and the Court of Appeal of Yukon on February 11, 2024. He has served as a member of these Courts since being appointed directly from private practice on April 20, 2017. This Court has greatly benefitted from his skill and leadership. His contributions will be missed by all members of the Court and by those appearing before him. The Court is thankful for his contributions and wishes him the best for his retirement.

UPDATE: COURT OF APPEAL RECORD AND COURTROOM ACCESS POLICY

The following updates have been made to the Court of Appeal Record and Courtroom Access Policy:

  • Section 1.5 - Use of Personal Information in Reasons for Judgment 
  • Section 1.8 - Obtaining access to family court records - minute sheets and digital audio recordings are exempted from general restrictions
  • Section 1.10 - Retention, disposition and storage of records - updated to reflect changed requirements under the Information Management Act
  • New access request form which combines the former Access Request form and Appendix C form for restricted records

NEW: COURT OF APPEAL REQUEST FEES CHART CREATED

A Records Request Fees Chart has been created combining fees in Court of Appeal Rules Schedule 2 Court Fees Division 1 and Finance Directives.

JUDICIAL LAW CLERK PROGRAM RECRUITMENT FOR THE 2025-2026 TERM

Applications will be accepted to the Judicial Law Clerk Program for the 2025-2026 term starting January 8, 2024. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at 11:00 a.m., with video conference interviews with legal counsel to be scheduled in early February and final interviews with judges to be scheduled March 4 to March 7 (Court of Appeal) and March 11 to March 15 (Supreme Court). WELCOMING CEREMONY - THE HONOURABLE CHIEF JUSTICE LEONARD MARCHAND

On Thursday, February 8, 2024, the Court of Appeal will hold a formal ceremony to welcome the Honourable Chief Justice Marchand. The ceremony will take place at 4:15 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Vancouver Law Courts.
