NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION
The Supreme Court of British Columbia will be closed on September 30 in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The purpose of the day is to acknowledge the tragic and painful history of the residential school experience, to honour the healing journey of the Survivors, their families and their communities and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation.

Further to the observance of the National Day of Mourning for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II in British Columbia, the Supreme Court will be closed on Monday, September 19, 2022. Please see the Court’s Notice for details regarding the rescheduling of civil and criminal matters scheduled for Monday, September 19, 2022.

Effective immediately, references to the Sovereign in civil and criminal matters should be to “Rex” or “His Majesty the King” in place of “Regina” or “Her Majesty the Queen.” Please see the Court’s Notice for further information.

STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II
The Court of Appeal for British Columbia, the Supreme Court of British Columbia, and the Provincial Court of British Columbia recognize the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s 70-year reign was distinguished by her dignified service to the Commonwealth, and in particular, to Canada. The Queen’s unceasing sense of duty inspired generations of Canadians, and her wisdom and leadership will be deeply missed. The Courts extend their condolences to the Royal Family.

The Supreme Court of British Columbia announces that the Honourable Justice Barry Davies retired from the Supreme Court of British Columbia at Vancouver on September 4, 2022. Justice Davies was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1996.

JUDICIAL RETIREMENT - THE HONOURABLE JUSTICE WILLIAM GRIST
The Supreme Court of British Columbia announces that the Honourable Justice William Grist retired from the Supreme Court of British Columbia at Chilliwack on September 6, 2022. Justice Grist was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1990.

SPECIAL SITTING OF THE COURTS - SEPTEMBER 8, 2022
The Court of Appeal for British Columbia, the Supreme Court of British Columbia, and the Provincial Court of British Columbia are pleased to host a Special Sitting of the Courts on Thursday, September 8, 2022 in the Great Hall at the Vancouver Law Courts at 4:30 p.m.
Featuring remarks by the Chief Justices, the Chief Judge, and special guests, the event is a chance to reflect on the operations of the courts during the pandemic and to look forward. It also offers an opportunity to honour members of the judiciary and the legal community whose deaths were not otherwise publicly marked due to pandemic-related circumstances.
Members of the public are invited to attend the Special Sitting. The celebration will also be livestreamed on Zoom here.

Chief Justice Hinkson is pleased to advise that the Supreme Court has joined Twitter. The Court's official Twitter account is @BCSupremeCourt, which will be used to share information about the Court and its operations with members of the public, the media, the bar, and other organizations. PRACTICE DIRECTION 62 - SEALED BID PROCESS FOR FORECLOSURES AND OTHER MATTERS INVOLVING SALES OF LAND
Chief Justice Hinkson has issued Practice Direction 62 - Sealed Bid Process for Foreclosures and Other Matters Involving Sales of Land and has rescinded COVID-19 Notice No. 31. This Practice Direction sets out the process for submitting sealed bids to the Court for foreclosures and other matters involving the sale of land. Seller’s counsel is responsible for providing this Practice Direction to the listing agent for distribution to any interested buyers.
Please be reminded that, effective August 15, 2022, the Court will be returning to hearing chambers matters in person, unless the Court otherwise orders or directs. Please see COVID Notice No. 50 for more information.

The Supreme Court of British Columbia announces that the Honourable Justice Choi retired from the Supreme Court of British Columbia at Vancouver on July 14, 2022. Justice Choi was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2015.

CALL AND ADMISSION CEREMONY - FRIDAY, JULY 15, 2022
This event will take place in the Great Hall at the Vancouver Law Courts at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm. There will be approximately 175 candidates being called to the Bar. The ceremony will be conducted by The Honourable Justice Nathan Smith in the morning and the Honourable Justice Neena Sharma in the afternoon.
